The Young Israel Philharmonic Orchestra

The Young Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (YIPO) is Israel’s national youth orchestra, comprising 100 of Israel’s most talented young players of orchestral instruments between the ages of 14 and 18. The JMC believes strongly that outstanding young musicians from throughout the country should have a chance to come together to interact with their musical peers and experience music making at the highest level and, irrespective of their place of residence or financial means.

Twice a year, during the winter and summer school vacations, the YIPO brings participants together to work on challenging and inspiring symphonic repertoire, exposing them to musical sounds, textures and challenges that are not a regular part of their day-to-day musical experiences. The orchestra hosts renowned conductors from throughout the world to conduct the orchestra’s rehearsals and concerts, working alongside top Israeli instrumentalists who assist in the orchestra’s preparations through sectional rehearsals. In spite of its ‘youth’ status, the YIPO instills in its participants a level of discipline and musical excellence on par with that found in professional orchestras, giving its participants musical experiences that shape their development and accompany them for years to come.

Over their 3-4 years in the orchestra, YIPO members study between 15 and 20 major symphonic works, working with numerous conductors and instrumentalists along the way. In addition, the gala concerts that conclude the courses, held at the Jerusalem Theatre, and the Bronfman Auditorium (Heichal Hatarbut) in Tel Aviv, broadcast live on Israeli radio, to a combined audience of thousands. Over 90% of YIPO graduates go on to higher education (undergraduate and graduate degrees) in music, and many go on to take up prominent positions in the Israel Philharmonic and other orchestras in Israel and abroad.
